Most of my career has been as a management consultant. Initially I specialised in HR consultancy; more latterly, I have concentrated on performance development of consultants and practices.
Current interestsConsultant development and trainingIn 1989 I set up Consultancy Skills Training which specialises in this area. Since our formation we have worked for hundreds of organisations and trained thousands of consultants. We are a virtual training company; our small group of associates are experienced, self-employed management consultants. We work primarily in the UK, but have also worked extensively in other parts of the world.
Most of our work is in designing and delivering training and other performance improvement programmes in-house for our clients. We also run an extensive programme of public courses in the UK.
Our work is not limited to those with “consultant” in their job title; internal service providers (e.g. from HR or IT departments) use our training and there are others outside the regular professions (e.g. field engineers in the oil industry) who use our training to help them be more effective in delivering value to their clients.

Consultancy for knowledge-based organisationsOver the years clients have asked for support that entails consultancy rather than training interventions. In 2004 we set up GreySpace Consulting to embody this work. The type of client that needs our support is one for whom selling and delivering professional services is a relatively new activity. Challenges might be in managing consultants, deciding on value propositions, looking at new channels to market and so on.
